6 Best Christian Easter Movies to Watch

Sharing is caring!

Looking for some great Easter movies? Easter movies for kids (or Easter movies for families) allow children to experience visually Jesus’ Resurrection in a way that’s unique from other Christian Easter activities.

Some Christian Easter movies are classics that are perfect for all families; while other Easter movies are more controversial and graphic portrayals of the Resurrection that some consider to just be Easter movies for adults.

Either way, Easter movies challenge us to consider Jesus’ resurrection in a fresh new way.

Here our family’s list of the best Easter movies. Grab some popcorn and let’s look at these popular Easter movies (did your favorite Easter movie make the list?).

Best Cartoon Easter Movies for Kids

There are several Easter kids movies out there, but so many of them talk about the Easter bunny or just focus on spring in general and miss the true message of Easter about Jesus’ Resurrection.

However, there are a few cartoon Easter movies for kids that share the hope of Easter, and are also suitable for kids of all ages.

Our family’s favorite cartoon kids Easter movies are from Veggie Tales (how can you go wrong with Bob and Larry?).

Click on the links below to order them straight from Amazon so you’ll be ready to have an Easter inspired family movie night!

Our 2 Favorite Easter Movies About the Resurrection

The Easter Veggie Tales movies are fun. But when you’re ready to watch a more realistic portrayal of the Easter story with your family, I’d highly recommend  The Jesus Film and The Passion of the Christ.

The Jesus Film

The Jesus Film is a powerful and engaging Easter movie for kids of all ages, whether as part of Easter activities for kids, or any time of year.

The Jesus Film tells the whole story of Jesus’ life as told through the Gospel of Luke. It includes a poignant, accurate and powerful retelling of the Resurrection and the true Easter story, making it an excellent Easter movie to show kids.

This is the movie that missionaries show all over the world as an evangelistic tool. My husband and I had the opportunity to show it to a tribe of the Dinka people in Southern Sudan while we were on a missions trip there a few years ago!

It’s a classic Easter movie that’s perfect for kids of all ages! Share this Easter movie with your kids and talk about it afterwards as a family.

If you don’t already own this awesome Easter movie for kids, I highly recommend you pick up The Jesus Film here on Amazon.

The Passion of the Christ

The Passion of the Christ is equally powerful, but it definitely more graphic and is entirely in Aramaic, which leaves Christians divided as to whether or not it’s a good Easter movie for families.

While the Passion of the Christ is an incredibly emotional re-telling of the Easter story (and a great Easter movie), I would say its for kids at least 13 and up because of the violent portrayal of Jesus’ torture by the Roman authorities.

However, I would argue that there is great value in letting our kids see a depiction of the brutal beating our Savior endured for us. Our forgiveness came at a great price, and that price was paid through Jesus’ torture and eventual bloody death on the cross. That’s why our family recommends The Passion of the Christ as an Easter movie for kids that are able to emotionally handle the graphic and disturbing elements of the film.

Of course, use your discretion about if or when this Easter movie would be a good fit for your family. You might decide that this is more of an Easter movie for adults.

2 Other Easter Movies for Families to Consider

Son of God DVD

One Easter movie that we’re looking forward to seeing this Easter is Son of God. I’ve heard great things about this Easter movie about the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection.

I’ve heard that Son of God is somewhere between The Jesus Movie and The Passion of the Christ in terms of the graphic portrayal of Jesus’ suffering; and that it remains fairly true to the biblical account of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

With over 1200 reviews on Amazon (and almost 5 stars), Son of God clearly is at least worth considering as a Easter movie for families. Our family will be watching it as part of our Easter activities this year!

Check it out here on Amazon and let me know what you think in the comments.

Risen DVD

Another Easter movie on our family’s watch list this year is Risen. I remember wanting to see this Easter movie in the theater when it originally came out.

What makes Risen different from other Easter movies for families is that it shows the Resurrection from the eyes of a non-believer. I love that it’s described as a non-polished and gritty re-telling of the Easter story because, clearly, not everyone saw Jesus as the Messiah.

This Easter movie focuses on a Roman soldier’s need to understand more about who Jesus was and about how the Resurrection could have actually happened.

I appreciate the concept behind Risen because, from what I can tell from the reviews, it considers the Easter account by trying to deal with the unanswered questions that any of us would ask should we have been in first century Jerusalem at the time. I came to faith in Christ because of my questions about Christianity, and I appreciate that this Easter movie is not afraid to confront those questions too.

From what I’ve read, Risen is violent, but not as violent as The Passion of the Christ. However, I’d still recommend that parents preview this Easter movie for kids before watching it as a family.

You can get Risen–a different sort of Easter movie for families–here on Amazon.
